| Georgia and Poland President Encounter GunfireTue, 02 Dec 2008 01:11:13 -0800 by TheLeadersOfTheWorldSo much for a ceasefire agreement huh. *Presidents Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia and Lech Kaczynski of Poland said they were met with machine-gun fire when they visited a Russian checkpoint near the South Ossetian boundary. No one was harmed in the encounter, but Mr. Saakashvili said it should convince Europe that Russia was in the most extreme violation of a French-brokered cease-fire. The South Ossetian and Russian authorities denied any shooting had taken place, and said the two presidents intentionally provoked their forces. Speaker Bronislaw Komorowski, a former defense minister, earlier said that "In a threatening situation, the president is immediately put inside the car, and the car drives off, as the president is protected by a bodyguard. But here we saw both presidents standing and talking, and it seems one of them [Saakashvili] was laughing. This raises many questions." He also said it must have been a "blind sniper" who fired shots from 30 meters away, but missed altogether, and called the alleged incident "not serious." Grigory Karasin, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the Interfax news agency that Saakashvilis account of shooting was one more instance of wishful thinking on the part of Georgia, and the attack was "a clear provocation" staged by Georgia. "They arrange provocations and then blame Russia," he said. Poland President Kaczynski gave his own account of the incident, saying shots had been fired from what sounded like Kalashnikovs, but that it was not clear who was targeted. He also called on the rest of the European Union to draw "proper conclusions" from the attack. The EU and NATO voiced concern over the incident on Monday, but stopped short of accusing Russia. How the problem was fixed This information allows users to assess the threat to their systems. * Version numbers of affected packages * Version numbers of fixed packages * Information on where to obtain the updated packages (usually from the Debian security archive) * References to upstream advisories, CVE identifiers, and any other information useful in cross-referencing the vulnerability 5.8.5.3. Preparing packages to address security issues One way that you can assist the security team in their duties is to provide them with fixed packages suitable for a security advisory for the stable Debian release. When an update is made to the stable release, care must be taken to avoid changing system behavior or introducing new bugs. In order to do this, make as few changes as possible to fix the bug. Users and administrators rely on the exact behavior of a release once it is made, so any change that is made might break someone's system. This is especially true of libraries: make sure you never change the API or ABI, no matter how small the change. This means that moving to a new upstream version is not a good solution. Instead, the relevant changes should be back-ported to the version present in the current stable Debian release. Generally, upstream maintainers are willing to help if needed. If not, the Debian security team may be able to help. In some cases, it is not possible to back-port a security fix, for example when large amounts of source code need to be modified or rewritten. If there are other bugs in your package that you would like to fix, make an upload to proposed-updates in the usual way, after the security advisory is issued. The security update mechanism is not a means for introducing changes to your package which would otherwise be rejected from the stable release, so please do not attempt to do this. Review and test your changes as much as possible. Check the differences from the previous version repeatedly (interdiff from the patchutils package and debdiff from devscripts are useful tools for this, see Section A.2.2, debdiff ). Be sure to verify the following items: * Target the right distribution in your debian/changelog. For stable this is stable-security and for testing this is testing-security, and for the previous stable release, this is oldstable-security. Do not target distribution -proposed-updates or stable! * The upload should have urgency=high. * Make descriptive, meaningful changelog entries. Others will rely on them to determine whether a particular bug was fixed. Always include an external reference, preferably a CVE identifier, so that it can be cross-referenced. Include the same information in the changelog for unstable, so that it is clear that the same bug was fixed, as this is very helpful when verifying that the bug is fixed in the next stable release. If a CVE identifier has not yet been assigned, the security team will request one so that it can be included in the package and in the advisory. * Make sure the version number is proper. It must be greater than the current package, but less than package versions in later distributions. If in doubt, test it with dpkg --compare-versions. Be careful not to re-use a version number that you have already used for a previous upload. For testing, there must be a higher version in unstable.
