It was published 1952 under the title "Rhythm Study No. 1", even though Nancarrow did not longer use the term "rhyhtm" in his titles, probably because the temporal aspects of his studies were much more complex than what is associated with this word. In the first study, influence of the serialism are hearable, the second part for example is a retrograde version of the first, but high tones are now played in the bass and vice versa.Introduction to Conlon Nancarrow:Nancarrow was a composer, born in the U.S., who fought in the spanish civil war and finally exiled to Mexico. His isolation of good musicians and his complex style of composing are the most important reasons why he mainly wrote music for the player piano. He punched every single note into an extremly long piece of paper, which the self-playing instrument read. For his longer works, he needed months and sometimes even a year to complete a composition.
