El grupo, de unas treinta personas afines a la izquierda abertzale llevaba siete horas encerrados en el rectorado de la Universidad del País Vasco (UPV), en el campus de Leioa (Vizcaya), en el que entraron al mediodía. Los agentes estaba desde hacía horas en el exterior del campus universitario, en previsión de que su intervención fuera necesaria y han actuado a petición de autoridades universitarias. Fuentes de la UPV, han señalado que el personal de la universidad había abandonado el rectorado hacia las cinco de la tarde, donde la treintena de jóvenes, equipados con sacos de dormir y comida, se habían encerrado en protesta por el Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior, llamado 'proceso de Bolonia', y en rechazo a los candidatos de las elecciones a rector del próximo jueves, Iñaki Goirizelia y Marisol Esteban.La ocupación se había producido mientras el claustro se celebraba en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Náutica de Portugalete (Vizcaya) en vez de en Leioa, precisamente por razones de seguridad después de los incidentes habidos en reuniones anteriores y en la campaña electoral a rector. Asímismo, en el claustro celebrado en Portugalete también un grupo de la izquierda abertzale se concentró en el exterior, mientras que estudiantes claustrales de la izquierda abertzale fueron expulsados de la reunión por interrumpir la intervención de los candidatos a rector, Iñaki Goirizelaia y Marisol Esteban, con gritos y consignas.Este claustro 'electoral',además, comenzó en la segunda convocatoria, a las 11:30 horas, después de que en la primera no se alcanzara el quórum necesario. La falta de claustrales provocó una hora antes la suspensión definitiva del claustro en el que el rector, Juan Ignacio Pérez, debía presentar el informe de gestión correspondiente al curso académico 2007-2008.
