| Hope the Pigeon - Moby "18"Tue, 02 Dec 2008 13:18:27 -0800 by hopeinparisA couple of Wood Pigeons made a nest in my flower box in Paris, trashing my geraniums. When I noticed the nest, I let them be. One egg was laid and then another. I named the parents Patience and Constant. They took turns sitting on the eggs 24/7 until the first egg hatched on Bastille Day 2008, exactly 18 days after it was laid. After several more days it was clear that the second egg had died. I named the surviving baby Hope. After the hatching, Patience and Constant continued to sit on the nest, keeping the squab warm, and feeding it with pigeon "milk" which they manufactured from their own food. This pigeon baby food is regurgitated from the throat into the squabs beak. At 12 days old, Hope was left alone for the first time and I found her at 4:00 am, drenched in a torrential downpour. I made a bed for her and brought her in for a few hours, putting her back in the nest before her parents returned! The next night it rained again and I put up an umbrella to keep her dry. In the week that followed she began to stretch her wings, balance on the edge of the window box, and look outward to the world beyond. At 20 days old, Hope flew for the first time. She came back to rest in the nest in the flower box on three occasions. After that she stayed out with her flock. Today she is healthy, plump, beautiful, and free. If you ever have the great fortune to have a pigeon born on your windowsill or balcony, please watch over them tenderly. It is a great gift. Joe grabbed his jacket and started jogging down the street. Maybe if he hurried a little he would catch up with Kayla. He had started to like Kayla more than just a friend, but he couldnt. He was still with Jessica, and even if they broke up he couldnt be with Kayla. He didnt wanna know what Jessica would do then. Joe jogged all the way home, but he never saw Kayla. -Maybe she ran home,- he said to himself as he entered his own house. He walked into the kitchen where his mom was. -Hey mom,- he said and jumped up on the counter.-Hi Joseph. How was work?- his mom smiled.-Good,- Joe shrugged.-Great. Could you and Nicholas set the table for me?--Sure..- Joe jumped down from the counter and walked up the stairs to his younger brothers room.-Hey Nick, mom wanted us to set the table..- Joe said as he entered Nicks room.-Just a second. I have to finish this Spanish Presentation..- Nick said.-More Spanish? It seems like everything you do is Spanish..- Joe said and sat down on Nicks bed.-Yeah, most of it..--So what is the presentation about?--This woman.. I cant remember her name. Kayla has it.. Im having the presentation with her.--Youre writing a presentation about someone you dont know the name of?- Joe asked.-Im writing about her husband.. Anyways, lets go and set the table,- Nick said and stood up. He walked out of his room with Joe close behind.-Did you know the Torres family is going on a vacation tomorrow?- Paul asked the rest of his family.-They are? Where?- Denise asked.-Theyre going to Hawaii for two weeks, so Richard wondered if Kayla could stay here. Cause they planned this before Kayla came. And they have talked to Kayla about it and she was okay with it.--Of course. Joe helped with the dishes before he had to go. He grabbed his jacket and walked down the streets to the beach. It was a cold October nigh and the wind was blowing around him. Joe came to the beach and sat down. Kayla usually came ten minutes late, because she didnt want to leave at the same time as Joe, in case Jessica saw them. She couldnt risk that. Joe sat on the beach for atleast 20 minutes, but Kayla didnt show up. He found his phone and dialed her number. It rang five times.-Hello?--Hi Kay, where ..- Joe started but was interrupted.-Hah, fooled you there, right? This is my voice mail. I cant come to the phone right now so call again later or leave a message after the beep. Bye!--Fuck,- Joe mumbled and hung up.5 minutes later he tried to call her again. This time it only rang 3 times.-Dont call Kayla again,- a male voice said and hung up. Joe recognized the voice. | Rite Aid ShootingTue, 02 Dec 2008 13:12:47 -0800 by JacksdirectionBATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - An East Baton Rouge grand jury indicted 15-year-old Michael Nicholas on four counts of attempted second-degree murder Thursday (Oct. 23rd).Nicholas allegedly shot three people, and tried to shoot another person but missed, two weeks ago at the Rite Aid on Plank Road. Prosecutors say he will be tried as an adult.Surveillance video shows, who prosecutors say is Michael Nicholas, enter the Rite Aid. Three customers are lined up to make purchases. The gunman backs up, drops his bag on the ground, and then begins blasting without warning.He then rushes behind the counter, fumbles around a bit, and orders the cashier to open the register. He fires another shot, missing the cashier. Then, you can see the gunman leaving the building only a couple of minutes later. Prosecutors say they plan to introduce the graphic video of the shooting to the jury, when it's eventually seated in this case.Two weeks later, the district attorney's office has charged Nicholas. Prosecutors make no bones about charging him as an adult. "You have three individuals with bullets in their body. You have a store now absent its cash. It was done brutally, it was done recklessly, and it was done intentionally," says lead prosecutor Aaron Brooks.The public defender's office has already been assigned to defend Nicholas. Prosecutors say the crime fits the definition of an adult criminal matter. "When his conduct was evaluated and the evidence was reviewed, a decision was made that this is the proper treatment for the individual," Brooks says. Defense attorney Margaret Lagatudda has been assigned to the case. She did not return calls Thursday evening asking for comments on the case.In order to get the teen charged as an adult, prosecutors had to argue for what's called a juvenile transfer. The defense had filed a motion with juvenile court to block the move to adult court. The district attorney's office chose to move quickly based on the evidence they had obtained from the Rite Aid, witnesses, and others. Only $153 was taken and fortunately, not one of the three victims shot died.Veteran defense attorney Margaret Lagatudda recently defended multiple murderer Anthony Bell. Nicholas will next be transferred to the parish prison and he will be formally charged in front of Judge Don Johnson in two weeks.
