| Everytime I Close My Eyes - a Luke and Laura video tributeMon, 01 Dec 2008 18:58:47 -0800 by 26MagnoliasOn December 2, 2008, if the spoilers are correct, we will hear Tracy Quartermaine tell Luke Spencer that their "marriage" is over. Oh, how I hope that is true and remains true. I've never believed they were truly married in the first place, and I don't believe my heart ever will. As Luke said in the 1983 return: "Laura is my wife! First. Last. Always!" That pretty much sums it up for me.My attention turned back to those two glorious days in November of 1981 when Laura Webber Baldwin married Lucas Lorenzo Spencer. I'm sure everyone has heard the question: Where were you when John Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Robert Kennedy and John Lennon were shot? The same is true if you were to ask people if they remember where they were when Luke and Laura got married. In the overall scheme of things, it seems ludicrous that a moment in Daytime Televsion history could be in the same category as such significant historical events. Yet, 30 million people can answer that question. Luke and Laura are as much a part of the fabric of 20th Century history as anything else witnessed. It was the most watched Daytime televsion event in history and retains that honor almost 30 years later. Likewise, Luke and Laura remain the number one Soap Opera Couple in Daytime history as reported last month by SOD. It's not surprising. They are magic - pure magic! If you don't know what Daytime Royalty or Daytime's Most Golden Couple looks like, all you have to do is pull up a Luke and Laura video and spend just a moment watching this poetry in motion duo spin their gold to understand it. They are master gold-spinners. If you don't get it, then, sadly for you, you don't understand what magic is! As Tony Geary said in July of 2007 "There is still much gold left to be mined with these two characters." It's a shame that ABC/GH won't give the audience what we've been begging for since Genie left the show in 2002, 2006 and most recently, last month. I wrote these thoughts down in a journal on November 16 of 2006: "On November 16-17, 1981, I cut my afternoon college classes to watch the biggest event in daytime history. Glued to my chair, eyes fixed on the t.v., I thought I was REALLY witnessing the marriage of two very dear friends. 25 years later, glued to my chair, eyes fixed on the t.v., I feel like Im witnessing the re-marriage of two very dear friends. Genie Francis and Tony Geary still captivate their audience after all these years in their roles of Laura and Luke Spencer. Some things never change, they just endure and get better with age...."It still holds true today. Genie and Tony have a connection which transcends the ordinary. Those of us who have been priviledged to have witnessed the magic since day one, continue to hold to the belief that they will be together once again. You see, all roads lead back to them! They always have. They always will. There's just no other way for the story to end.Luke has said that the best day of his life [except for the day she returned to him in 1983] was the day he and Laura were married. In 2006, when Laura slipped back into catatonia and went to her happy place, it's no coincidence that she returned to their wedding day.I thought we could all use a little magic again. He won numerous awards, including an Academy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Cannes Film Festival Award, an Emmy award, and many honorary awards. He also won several national championships as a driver in Sports Car Club of America road racing and his race teams won several championships in open wheel IndyCar racing. He a co-founder of Newman's Own, a food company from which Newman donated all post-tax profits and royalties to charity. As of May 2007, these donations exceeded 220 million dollars. On Friday Sep 26, 2008 Newman died at his home in Westport, Connecticut, of complications arising from lung cancer.
