| Forest of Dean Railway, Pt 1Tue, 02 Dec 2008 11:01:35 -0800 by DeansForestFlixThe Dean Forest Railway is a 4.25 mile long heritage railway that runs between Lydney and Parkend in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. The route was part of the Severn and Wye Railway which ran from Lydney to Cinderford. The society that operates the line started steam locomotive operations in 1971, and bought the trackbed and line from British Rail in 1986. Services were extended from Norchard to Lydney Lakeside in 1991, Lydney Junction in 1995/96, Tufts Junction in 2001, and to Whitecroft in 2003. HM Railway Inspectorate approval for the section to Parkend was granted in December 2005. Trains are operated by both steam and heritage diesel locomotives, and heritage diesel multiple units. The Dean Forest railway has recently been given the former GWR signal box that stood slightly to the east of Codsall station in Staffordshire. Its removal was completed in July 2007, and will be placed at Whitecroft railway station.[edit] StationsLydney Junction (Terminus) St Mary's Halt (Opened as Lydney Lakeside) Trains call on request towards Norchard/Parkend Lydney Town Middle Forge Junction - no station just ground frame where points are changed to go into Norchard High or Low Level Platforms. 450 yards from Norchard Norchard Low Level (Terminus) Norchard High Level Whitecroft (Not open - station under construction) Parkend (Terminus) Steam locomotives Operational steam locomotivesBR(W) 0-6-0PT 5700 Class no. 9681 Steam locomotives under overhaulPeckett and Sons 0-4-0ST "Uskmouth 1" Austerity Saddle Tank Engine 0-6-0 "Warrior" GWR 0-4-2T 1400 Class no. 1450 GWR 4575 Class 2-6-2T Nos 5538 and 5541 Steam locomotives awaiting overhaul"Wilbert" an Austerity 0-6-0 Saddle Tank Engine Diesel locomotives Hunslet 0-4-0 Diesel Shunter "Don Corbett" [1] Hibberd 0-4-0 Diesel Mechanical Shunter "Pluto" [2] BR 0-6-0 Class 08 nos. 13308 "Charlie", 08473, 08734, 08769 "Gladys", BR 0-6-0 Class 14 no. | Railfanning Green Bay March 29, 2008 Part 1Tue, 02 Dec 2008 10:01:43 -0800 by HighIronofWisconsinOn the afternoon of Saturday, March 29, Mark "Fuzzy" Hintz of http://www.fuzzyworl d3.com and I railfanned the Canadian National Fox River Subdivision. Not much was going on in the yard when we got there so we headed up to the nearby WPS Pulliam Power Plant and as luck would have it, their plant switcher was on duty knocking the coal cars around. It's an ALCo S2 rebuilt with a new prime mover. While that was going on, we heard CN A411 (Chicago-SSM via Green Bay) on the scanner announcing his approach to De Pere. We hung around watching the switcher for a few more minutes and then headed south along Broadway Street, paralleling the main until we saw gates going down. Then we raced it back up Broadway and shot it crossing the road and entering the yard. ES44DCs CN 2249 and 2261 power the train. Two local jobs were now lined up to get out of the yard in short order after A411 cleared. First came L585 behind Illinois Central GP40R 3123, unfortunately my camcorder battery gave out just as the train got going. With a fresh battery in place, barely 10 minutes later along came SD40-3 CN 5942 with L515, another mainline local. 5942 is one of the Alstom units that bears GTW reporting marks but never actually wore blue and red paint or belonged to the Grand Trunk Western when it was an independent railroad, as opposed to a U.S. operating division of Canadian National. We decided to try and chase L515 to De Pere, where they can sound the horn. The train picked up speed quickly and with us hitting a lot of red lights, we barely made it to Cedar Street in time. As you can tell I didn't even have time to level my tripod properly.Stay tuned for Part 2.
