| Georgia and Poland President Encounter GunfireTue, 02 Dec 2008 01:11:13 -0800 by TheLeadersOfTheWorldSo much for a ceasefire agreement huh. *Presidents Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia and Lech Kaczynski of Poland said they were met with machine-gun fire when they visited a Russian checkpoint near the South Ossetian boundary. No one was harmed in the encounter, but Mr. Saakashvili said it should convince Europe that Russia was in the most extreme violation of a French-brokered cease-fire. The South Ossetian and Russian authorities denied any shooting had taken place, and said the two presidents intentionally provoked their forces. Speaker Bronislaw Komorowski, a former defense minister, earlier said that "In a threatening situation, the president is immediately put inside the car, and the car drives off, as the president is protected by a bodyguard. But here we saw both presidents standing and talking, and it seems one of them [Saakashvili] was laughing. This raises many questions." He also said it must have been a "blind sniper" who fired shots from 30 meters away, but missed altogether, and called the alleged incident "not serious." Grigory Karasin, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the Interfax news agency that Saakashvilis account of shooting was one more instance of wishful thinking on the part of Georgia, and the attack was "a clear provocation" staged by Georgia. "They arrange provocations and then blame Russia," he said. Poland President Kaczynski gave his own account of the incident, saying shots had been fired from what sounded like Kalashnikovs, but that it was not clear who was targeted. He also called on the rest of the European Union to draw "proper conclusions" from the attack. The EU and NATO voiced concern over the incident on Monday, but stopped short of accusing Russia. After celebrating the fifth anniversary of Dictator coup, the country's repressive and war minded ruler Mikhail Saakashvili took his guest and long-time ally, Polish president Lech Kaczynski, on a tour near the war-ravaged region of South Ossetia. Shortly afterwards, the Georgian leadership says its convoy was fired upon by Russian soldiers. The Polish president claims he didn't see anything because it was dark but believes he did hear something.Kaczynski said: A group of armed men have opened fire from machine guns some 30 seconds after we got out of out cars.
