| Landing Assistant for Microsoft Flight Simulator (and real airplanes)Sun, 23 Nov 2008 07:52:26 -0800 by wolframschiffmannThe Landing Assistant supports pilots in landing an airplane. The panel has an additional instrument that indicates the current altitude of the landing gear over the runway (graphically and numerically in feet). In the video it is positioned left of the airspeed indicator. The red bar which appears later in the video simulates the tire axis of the main landing gear. It moves into the grey underground (runway) as soon as you reach the flare altitude. When the airplane touchs the ground the red bar moved to the bottom of the display - above it you see the blue sky. With help of the Landing Assistant pilots now get this most important distance information during flare and this will improve their landing skills. Besides the new FS-panel I also constructed a Landing Assitant (LAS) protoype for a real airplane that will be offered for an affordable price in the near future. I conducted several promising test flights in a Katana DV20. Beside an head up display it also provides additional audio cues which enable the pilot to make extremely soft landings :) The real LAS is especially helpful for night landings when there are no visual cues. That required us to construct a protoype that will deactivate a bomb (by pushing a button) without exploding it (touching the decoy bombs). It was challenging to make it happen. Everything need to be taken into account, center of mass, friction, weight, design and much more... I was the first person ever [not showing off, I say it in the humble way] in Polytechnic University of NYU to retrieve balls to the starting line...!!! I'm so happy...!!!
