They can be store bought pre-made kits (bad idea) or you can make a much better one putting one together yourself. You can pack away all the necessary items you would need to survive a power outage, terrorist attack or natural disasters. You can go super-simple and only pack the extreme necessary items or go all out and sleep well at night knowing whatever may happen you have a plan and are ready for it. I chose to go all out and make a serious kit. Last year there was a 7 day power outage in the dead of winter, it was so cold in my house I could see my breath all the perishables kept fine outside on the balcony. I learned all kinds of lessons during those cold seven days. Some people choose to cram everything into one big enormous Bug-out-Bag, I choose to use several Bags, Pouches and a Backpack by Maxpedition. They make great gear and are excellent to use as Bug-out-Bags. The pouch here today is a Maxpedition FR-1 Pouch, designed to be used as a medical kit. It is an excellent bag for the job in so many ways. I have managed to squeeze in all the medical supplies from a North 35-People Bulk Medical Kit into it along with some extras including a Streamlight MicroStream LED Flashlight because of its small size, brightness and it can be worn around the neck and held in the mouth. The FR-1 Pouch opens up wide with a bungee cord to adjust how wide you want it to be. It has a zipped pouch on the inside and elastic loops for dressing. The pouch has loops for a sling, it can be attached to MOLLE gear or stashed in a larger bag. The outside has a Velcro field for a name strip or a small patch. Ive spent some time in the dark and its turned me into a flashlight fiend, I add flashlights to all my bags and gear.
