| The Ralph Jones Mini Metro Movable Organ (Toaster)Sun, 09 Nov 2008 09:31:14 -0800 by latribeOrgan enthusiast Ralph Jones built an electronic organ and one cannot fail to admire both his brilliance and eccentricity. It was a major achievement and an ambitious project to create a portable three manual instrument which could be transported around in his Mini Metro. The result would have been put in a skip by any sane wife, but one has to admire the dogged determination of anyone audacious enough to try to create an useful imitation of a pipe organ out of many thousands of electronic parts. Whilst leaving a number of aesthetics to be desired, Ralph's design was for difined minimum size and minimum weight and at each stage one has to admire his brilliant ingenuity, from home made keyboards made of wood and perspex, to home made capacitors, the design of which no-doubt was specifically to achieve stability of tuning.I'm not a fan of electronic organs, although I'll suffer them for appropriate purposes. This instrument is potentially in a superior class of non-digital electronic organs which try to synthesise the sound of organ pipes by filtering a combination of electrical waveforms because this one uses a single oscillator for each note of each manual. Because of this, when the sounds are added together with the addition of stops, controlled here by stop-tabs rather than draw-knobs, the sounds should add properly. On instruments where fewer oscillators are used, the stops don't add and full organ sound is often disappointing. In the days of valves, all the number of valves in such previous generations of organs had red hot filaments which glowed prettily and generated a lot of heat - so such electronic organs began to be known toasters, a term that organists quite properly still apply derogatorily today. Even good digital instruments don't properly match up to pipe organs when heard side by side, so even state of the art attempts to digitally electronically reproduce pipe organs can still be referred to as a toaster . . .
