And I was sitting there like an idiot and not breathing. Then for a half a second of looking at me he turned around and I felt the oxygen back in my throat. "Miss. Gomez, answer my question and put away the book," Tubby said. I was glad I nick-named him Tubby. "I moved here," I answered plainly. "That's it?" he asks me. "Yeah, I didn't go to the beach and get tans or anything. Personally, I feel it's better to keep away from things that can cause you to die," I said looking at those girls with their tans. "Tans don't cause you to die," one of them said to me. "Yeah it does. Sun can cause skin cancer," I said to her. "You're stupid. That's what sun tan lotion is for," she said to me. "Yeah. I am stupid for not wasting my summer and lying half naked on the beach getting a so-called tan," I said to her. Nick, still turned away from me snickered slightly. I dunno why...but it made me feel very good inside. Was he laughing at me or with me? But he was laughing. And his smile was divine. "What did you do this summer that was useful?" asked Tubby. "I read 210 books," I announced to him. I did. I feel very accomplished. "Loser," one of the girls snorted at me. "Slut," I said under my breath. Nick snickered again. This time, I was sure he was laughing with me. "Well done, Miss. Gomez. A bookworm are we?" Tubby asked me. "You could say that," I said. And from there he droned about what we'll be learning about this year. I listened but not really. I memorized everything Nick did. The slightest movement amazed me for some odd reason. He was just like every other guy. But there was this mystery to him. A mystery to his gorgeous eyes. The bell rang and I got up. Nick took his time and was cool as he walked up and out of the class. I started walking towards the door when one of the girls who yelled at me for saying tanning causes you to die, pushed me with her Juicy Couture bag. "You should watch how you talk to me," she says to me. "Come Meaghan," one of her friends says to her. "Nice talking to you Couture whore,' I said walking away. She glared at me. It is the only process on earth that converts light energy into chemical energy. The process all begins when a photon of light, of the appropriate wavelength, hits the chlorophyll molecule. The chlorophyll molecule absorbs the energy from the photon, but loses one electron in the process. The oxidized chlorophyll must now replace the lost electron. The accessory protein, located in the thylakoid membrane grabs an electron from a nearby water molecule. As a result, the water molecule becomes unstable and falls apart. During this stage, photolysis takes place and oxygen is given off. The oxygen proceeds to leave the thylakoid space and the electron is passed to the cytochrome. The cytochrome then pumps protons from the stroma across the thylakoid memberane. There is now a constant supply of protons from photolysis and the excited cytochromes. In addition, there is also a constant supply of water molecules due to the aqueous environment in the thylakoid space. Due to the buildup of protons in the thylakoid space, a chemiosmotic gradient is created. When the thylakoid space reaches a pH of 5, the protein complex ATP synthase opens up a little tube. Protons from the thylakoid space rush through the tube and carry with them enormous energy, similar to how dams provide energy using water. Photosynthesis is made up of two parts. The first part is a reaction that requires sunlight, while the reaction in the second part is completely light-independent. Our video is a song that summarizes the 11 steps of the light-dependent reaction.First, a photon of light of the appropriate wavelength hits the chlorophyll molecule. The chlorophyll molecule then absorbs the energy of the proton and loses one electron. This is known as oxidation. Once the chlorophyll molecule is oxidized, it needs to replace an electron. It begins with a plant, specifically the leaves of a plant. Photosynthesis takes place within the leaves of the plant. Photosynthesis takes place inside an organelle called the chloroplast. Within the chloroplast there are thylakoids. Each thylakoid completes the process of photosynthesis across its membrane. It is the unique process that the thylakoid membrane's integral proteins perform that produces oxygen. There are two different kinds of photosynthesis: light-dependent and light-independent. The light-dependent reaction produces energy. The light-independent reaction produces glucose. During the light dependent reaction something called photolysis or photodissociation occurs.
