| Fallout 3 commercial (UK)Sat, 22 Nov 2008 03:04:51 -0800 by dalbster3Fallout 3 is an action role-playing game released by Bethesda Game Studios. It is the third major game in the Fallout series, which has also spawned the spin-offs Fallout Tactics and Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel.Fallout 3 takes place in the year 2277, 30 years after the setting of Fallout 2 and 200 years after the nuclear war that devastated the game's world. The game places the player in the role of an inhabitant of Vault 101, a survival shelter designed to protect a small number of humans from the nuclear fallout. When the player's father disappears in mysterious circumstances, the player is forced to escape from the Vault and journey into the ruins of Washington D.C. to track him down. Along the way the player is assisted by a number of other human survivors and must battle a myriad of enemies that now inhabit the wasteland. The game has an attribute and combat system typical of an action role-playing game but also incorporates elements of first-person shooter and survival horror games. The game was released in North America on October 28th 2008, in Europe and Australia on October 30tb 2008, and in the United Kingdom and Ireland on October 31st 2008. It is available on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 video game consoles as well as the Windows operating system. The game received a positive response from critics who in particular praised its open-ended gameplay and flexible character-levelling system. It has been compared favourably to the 2007 game BioShock for its setting and use of elements from mid-Twentieth Century American culture. However critics have described some weaknesses including the lack of precision in real-time combat and little variety in enemy types. Public reception was overwhelmingly positive on release with high sales figures, particularly compared to previous titles in the series. | Avital Ronell - European Graduate School - 2008 4Sat, 22 Nov 2008 02:22:42 -0800 by egsvideohttp://www.egs.edu/ Avital Ronnell, Professor of German, comparative literature, and English at New York University, where she directs the Research in Trauma and Violence project, and has also written as a literary critic, a feminist, and philosopher. Public open lecture session given at the European Graduate School, Media and Communication Studies Department Program in 2008. EGS, Saas-Fee, Switzerland, Europe.Ronell was born in Prague to Israeli diplomats and was a performance artist before entering academia. She studied with Jacob Taubes at the Hermeneutic Institute at the Free University of Berlin, received her Ph.D. under the advisement of Stanley Corngold at Princeton University in 1979, and then continued her studies with Jacques Derrida and Hélène Cixous in Paris. She joined the comparative literature faculty at the University of California, Berkeley before moving to NYU. She is also a core faculty member at the European Graduate School. Themes of her work include technology (Test Drive, Telephone Book) and Stupidity/Idiocy. In addition to her own writing, she has produced English translations of Derrida's work.Ronell's work in The Telephone Book focuses on three themes: technology, schizophrenia and electric speech. The book begins with a sustained examination of Heidegger's involvement with the (Nazi) National Socialist Party of Germany. Early in the book she describes it as a gesture of anti-racist activism. It proceeds through a history of the telephone, looking at the structure of "the call", as in Heidegger's "call of being", and applying that form to various subjects. A close friend of Derrida's, Ronell's work is heavily informed by the strategy of deconstruction, using close readings and looking at the play of language to find the marginalized group or idea that is pushed out from the center. In this work Ronell demonstrates the complexity of "the call" and its presence throughout contemporary culture including technology, psychology and art. In the book, the rejects the authoritarian position of the author and instead refers to herself as the "operator" of the text.Crack Wars focuses on Madame Bovary, looking at addiction to literature and comparing it to addiction to drugs. She describes the work as being a political gesture against the hysteria of the "racist" war on drugs. It begins with a wide survey of literary discussions of intoxication, including Nietzsche, Baudelaire, Benjamin and more. The book proceeds by looking closely at Heidegger's descriptions of want, wishing and "being towards".The Test Drive examines the underlying logic of contemporary scientific discourses and their ethical and political implications. It does so by focusing on the idea of "the test" as a basis for discovering knowledge. Related: avital ronell egs european graduate school feminism deconstruction derrida philosophy media | |

| 638. The Sloop John B (Traditional Bahamas) - A CapellaSat, 22 Nov 2008 01:33:58 -0800 by raymondcrookeI put up a video of this song not long ago, but couldn't resist adding this one as a companion piece. Last night, my wife and I went on a boat ride with members of the Hong Kong St David's Society to Rainbow Restaurant on Lamma Island. After several beers both on the hour-long boat road and with the seafood meal, nothing could stop this group of mainly Welsh guys from bursting into song, led by Terry Brewster. We even got the group at the next table to join in. This song is also known as "I Wanna Go Home" and "John B Sails". Carl Sandburg collected an early version from John & Evelyn McCutcheon of Treasure Island, West Indies where, according to Sandburg, "time & usage have given this song almost the dignity of a national anthem around Nassau. The weathered ribs of the historic craft lie imbedded in the sand at Governor's Harbor, whence an expedition, especially sent up for the purpose in 1926, extracted a knee of horseflesh & a ring-bolt. These relies are now preserved & built into the Watch Tower."As I mentioned last time I put up a video of the song, it is possible that the sloop's bad luck was due to its name. "John B" in Afro-Carribean culture, sounds like "jumby" -- a West African term referring to the undead creature that has been anglicized to "zombie."Alan Lomax collected a version from Cleveland Simmons group at Old Bight, Cat Island, Bahamas in 1935. Blind Blake Higgs, a popular Nassau entertainer, recorded a string band version with the Royal Victor Calypsos in 1952. The first version I heard was by The Weaver's, recorded in 1951. It was also recorded by The Travellers in 1952.Lonnie Donegan recorded the song in 1960, as did Bud and Travis, and The Kingston Trio had a big hit with it in 1962. probably the best known version these days is the one recorded by The Beach Boys (1966)It has been recorded by many other artists, including Johnny Cash, Jimmie Rodgers and Roger Whittaker. | Deer Dance-Joanne Shenandoah/Lawrence LaughingSat, 22 Nov 2008 01:09:52 -0800 by arafel1964DISCLAIMER BELOW.Joanne Shenandoah is an Iroquois singer and acoustic guitarist. She is a member of the Wolf Clan of the Oneida Nation of the Haudenosaunee Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy. Her music is a mixture of traditional songs and melodies with a blend of traditional and contemporary instrumentation. She has recorded more than 14 albums and won a multitude of awards, including "Artist of the Year" at the Native American Music Awards. She is currently living in Oneida, new York. Ms. Shenandoah received an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Syracuse University in 2002, the first ever given to a Native performer. She has received more Native American Music Awards (11 to date) than any other artist including a "Lifetime Achievement Award" in 2008. She has 14 albums and three GRAMMY nominations. She was awarded the GRAMMY for her part in the album "Sacred Ground" with Rita Coolidge and Robert Mirabel. She is the author of the book "Skywoman". She has also received numerous Syracuse Area Music Awards (SAMMYS) and was presented with the Grand Prize by the Native Film Festival in Montreal, Canada for her soundtrack in the documentary "Our Land Our Life" in June of 2008.Lawrence "Happy" Laughing is of The Mohawk Nationis and among a new generation of Native American singers that is bringing its traditional music and culture into a more contemporary setting. Lawrence Laughing conveys a quiet, hymn like quality in his songs. These aren't trance-inducing pow-wow chants, but gentle traditional songs that evoke his connections with his people and their environment. When spoken in English, such as on "Hope," the sentiments expressed can sound a bit simplistic, but when sung in Laughing's native Mohawk tongue, his songs carry a spirit that transcends language. The atmosphere of Now Our Minds Are One is provided by producer Tom Wasinger, who has also worked with Shenandoah. Wasinger surrounds Laughing's songs with delicate acoustic and electric guitar ornaments, subtle, coloristic percussion, and soothing harmonies. The simple pluck of a rabab or the stark whine of a bowed zither is enough to set the stage for Laughing's songs of the spirit. --John Diliberto -- Editorial Reviews from Amazon.comDisclaimer ; I don't own the music nor the pictures.
