They were known for their extremely energetic and often violent stage shows, and their blend of Art Rock and Hardcore Punk made them one the most important bands of the modern day Hardcore Scene. | Pitchshifter Gravid RageThu, 20 Nov 2008 21:24:22 -0800 by Electronomicon666Drum'n'bass consisting of J.S. Clayden (vocals, programming), J.A. Carter (guitar, programming), M.D. Clayden (bass), and D. (live drums), British band Pitchshifter started out in the early-'90s industrial underground as aggressive social confronters hearkening back to the early days of British punk and American hardcore (à la the Minutemen and Dead Kennedys). The band signed to Earache in 1992, and their first couple releases -- the mini-album Submit (1992) and the full-length Psensitised (1993) -- firmly entrenched the band in the industrial underground and brought their music to the attention of American listeners. Pitchshifter's shows used live programming and slides, and further spread their music in the States, though their confrontational attitude almost ensured a lack of commercial airplay. 1996's Infotainment saw Pitchshifter starting to outgrow their industrial roots and explore computer technology in an effort to bring their brand of aggressive social and political awareness to a more mainstream audience. The album is filled with exciting aggression and high-speed techno breaks that were unusual in commercial music. In addition, Pitchshifter included free samples at the end of the CD, and encouraged listeners to "steal" them for their own use. The band toured relentlessly and successfully for the next couple years, playing with the likes of Korn, Tool, Ministry, and even Girls Against Boys, bringing them to the attention of American major label DGC, which signed them in 1997. During this period the band also took a musical leap as evidenced by their 1998 release www.pitchshifter.com , their first on DGC Records. Filled with an enlightening combination of hard, punky breakbeats veering toward a unique sort of sweaty drum'n'bass, the album is built both on samples and live playing, thanks in part to the addition of guitarist Jim Davies. Deviant followed in mid-2000. Related: pitchshifter gravid rage industrial death metal | |

| Cravath 2008 Year-End BonusesThu, 20 Nov 2008 21:21:55 -0800 by lawcrossing2008http://www.Employmen tCrossing.comMany Americans are already aware that U.S. and international corporations find themselves in the midst of a critical recession, and there are no indications that the business climate will recover in the near future. With that in mind, Cravath is addressing certain matters relating to their clients, associate bonuses, and the outlook for 2009. The economic downturn has severely affected Cravath clients, and every week brings an unprecedented numbers of layoffs. Cravath believes it would be irresponsible and an unacceptable hardship on clients to raise billing rates for 2009, and subsequently they will not do so. Both 2006 and 2007 were extraordinary years for Cravath. 2006 and 2007 paid large year-end bonuses to associates. Cravath will continue to pay year-end bonuses, in light of the current business climate we do not think it is appropriate to pay the full bonuses previously paid.Associates should be prepared for the likelihood that the economy and Cravaths financial performance next year will not show improvement over this year and may receive little or no year-end bonuses next year. The bonuses will be paid on December 12, 2008. Related: "employmentcrossing.com" "videos" "cravath" "economic downturn" "year-end bonuses" "recession" "layoffs" | |

| The Wind and the Lion (1975) Part 9Thu, 20 Nov 2008 21:17:57 -0800 by windlionmovIn 1904, Morocco is the source of conflict by the powers of Imperial Germany, France, and the British Empire, all of whom are trying to establish a sphere of influence in that country. Mulai Ahmed er Raisuli (Sean Connery) is the leader of a band of Berber insurrectionists opposed to Sultan Abdelaziz and his uncle, the Bashaw of Tangier, whom Raisuli sees as corrupt and beholden to the Europeans. He kidnaps Eden Perdicaris(Candice Bergen) and her children, William (Simon Harrison) and Jennifer (Polly Gottesman) from their home, after murdering Sir Joshua Smith, a British friend of Eden's. Raisuli then issues an outrageous ransom, deliberately attempting to provoke an international incident in order to embarrass the Sultan and trigger civil war.Back in the United States, President Theodore Roosevelt (Brian Keith) is struggling for re-election, and decides to seize the kidnapping as both a political tool (coining the phrase "Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead!") and as an effort to flex America's military muscle as a new power - despite the protests of his cautious Secretary of State, John Hay (John Huston). The American Consul to Tangier, Samuel Gummere (Geoffrey Lewis), is unable to negotiate a peaceful return of the hostages, so Roosevelt sends the South Atlantic Squadron, under the command of Admiral French Ensor Chadwick (Roy Jenson), to Tangier, either to retrieve Perdicaris themselves or to force the Sultan to give in to Raisuli's demands. Over the course of time, however, Roosevelt finds himself gaining more and more respect for Raisuli, thinking of him as an honorable man who just happens to be his enemy. | Junior Brown (Freedom Machine)Thu, 20 Nov 2008 21:12:33 -0800 by Termite58He first learned to play piano from his father "before I could talk". His music career began in the 1960s, and he worked through that decade and the next developing his astonishing guitar skills. By the mid-1980s he was teaching guitar at the Hank Thompson School of Country Music at Rogers State University, in Claremore, Oklahoma. In 1985 Junior invented a double-necked guitar, with some assistance from Michael Stevens. Junior called the instrument his "guit-steel". When performing, Junior plays the guitar by standing behind it, while it rests on a small podium/music stand. The top neck on the guit-steel is a traditional 6-string guitar, while the lower neck is a full-size lapsteel guitar for slide playing. Brown has two guit-steels for recording and live work. The original instrument, dubbed "Old Yeller", has as its standard 6-string guitar portion the neck and pickups from Brown's previous stage guitar, a Fender Bullet. The second guit-steel, named "Big Red", has a neck laser-copied from the Bullet neck, but in addition to electric guitar pickups, both the standard and lapsteel necks use an identical Sho-Bud lapsteel pickup. There is a pocket in the upper bout of the guitar to hold the slide bar when it is not in use. Brown quickly became a local success in Austin, Texas as the house band at the Continental Club. His debut album was 1993's 12 Shades of Brown; it was followed by Guit with It. Later that year (1995), Brown released Semi Crazy, and followed it with 1997's Long Walk Back.In 1996, Brown was featured on the Beach Boys' now out-of-print album Stars and Stripes Vol. 1 performing a cover of their 1962 hit "409". The song features Brown playing guitar and singing lead with the Beach Boys singing harmonies and backing vocals. Brown also won the CMA Country Music Video of the Year award in 1996 for his video, "My Wife Thinks You're Dead," which featured 6-foot-7-inch Gwendolyn Gillingham.Brown's music has been showcased on various TV shows and movie soundtracks, including Me, Myself and Irene, SpongeBob SquarePants and the 2005 Dukes of Hazzard remake, in which he also played the narrator.Although Brown plays traditional country and Hawaiian steel styles, few of his performances will finish without some blues playing and surf instrumentals.Beginn ing in August 2006 Brown joined Bob Dylan's third tour of American minor league baseball stadiums. In April of 2008, Brown shot three pilot episodes of a country music program modeled after programs from the early 60s, in which Brown will play with a house band as well as guests as host of the show.[ Related: country | |
