| Gaming PC with XP Glitching Badly and FreezingWed, 24 Dec 2008 15:31:36 -0800 by homerslmpsonI have a custom built gaming machine that was built about 6 months ago. The specs are as follows:E8400 @ 3.0GHz4GB RAM (4 x 1GB)NVIDIA 9800GX2 GPUNVIDIA 790i Ultra SLI boardThe machine was running like garbage from day one. It was built with Vista Premium 32 bit and would randomly glitch up and freeze with whatever sound currently in game repeating over and over again. This seemed to happen ONLY when playing games that were graphically demanding (Crysis).In the end I had the power supply replaced, the video card replaced and added 2GB of ram bringing it from 2GB (originally) to 4GB (present). I also noticed that the temp on the I noticed that the OS sees only 2.5GB of memory even though I have 4GB installed. The BIOS sees 4GB but no the OS. So I tried to install a 64 bit OS to see what happens. In the beginning of the Vista installation I would get a message saying that the required drivers for the CD-ROM could not be loaded or found. Some type of weird message like that. I eventually tried installing XP and was successful. I installed the chipset drives along with the video card and FINALLY updated the very, very outdated BIOS. Everything was successful.I installed the Crysis demo and a 3D benchmark program. Crysis didn't seem to run as great as I thought it should but it ran well. I have a 19" LCD and I chose the highest resolution for the game along with the "auto" settings in Crysis which determined that everything set to HIGH would be sufficient. I tried messing with the anti-aliasing by bumping it up to 2x but it didn't run that great. I then turned it back down to OFF and the game is definitely playable. I then started messing with the NVIDIA system tools. I ran a test under the GPU settings that is called "FIND OPTIMAL SETTINGS" or something to that effect. It froze my computer so I rebooted.Windows boots up normally but after a few short seconds the screen messes up badly and I can't do anything at all except move the mouse. I recorded a video and posted it on youtube because I can't attach the movie file here.It is one minute long and shows exactly what I am talking about. Here is the link:I know it is Christmas Eve and there probably aren't many people around but if someone could please take a look at the clip I would appreciate it.Now that the BIOS has been updated and XP is glitching terribly I am thinking about giving Vista another shot (probably 64 bit).
