The study, commissioned by the Ontario Manufacturing Council, a government advisory panel of industry and labour representatives, warned that a collapse of General Motors Corp, Ford Motor Co and Chrysler Corp would spread across the country, hitting creditors, suppliers, parts manufacturers and dealerships. Effects on employment would be felt right away, the report states, with Canada losing 323,000 jobs if production ceased immediately, and 281,800 in Ontario alone, the report forecasts. Those figures would climb in five years to 582,000 jobs nationally in 2014, 517,000 of those in Ontario. A U.S. diplomat said that Prime Minister Stephen Harper called President George W. Bush said that if the United States provided aid, Canada would provide its own aid of 20 percent, which could amount to several billion dollars from Ottawa. Canada's potential $2.8 billion rescue package for the U.S.-based automakers is just the first of what could be several payments, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty says. McGuinty said that the C$3.4 billion promised jointly by Ottawa and Ontario to the Detroit Three is simply a lifeline to sustain the industry.
