After graduation, he was commissioned and assigned in the US Navy with 8 years of active duty. He returned to Prairie View in 1982 to become an Assistant Professor for Naval Sciences and as a Navigation and Ship-Handling instructor. During that time, he accepted a commission to the Naval Reserve and was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1995. Also at Prairie View, he served as an Associate Counselor of Admissions, Director of the Memorial Student Center, Assistant Director for University Centers, Director for Auxillery Services, Director of Student Initiatives and Development, and currently serves as the Governmental Relations Officer. He also serves on the city council for the city of Prairie View, as well as County Commissioner for Precinct 3 in Waller County. He was elected Mayor of Prairie View three times, has been President and Chief of the Prairie View Volunteer Fire Department. He is also married and the father of four children.
