| Jan Garber Orchestra - Boulevard Of Broken Dreams (1934)Wed, 07 Jan 2009 21:29:25 -0800 by edmundusrexJan Garber (Nov.5,1894, Indianapolis - Oct.5,1977, Shreveport) was an American jazz bandleader.Garber was known as "The Idol of the Airwaves" in his heyday of the 1920's and '30s, playing jazz in the vein of contemporaries such as Paul Whiteman and Guy Lombardo. Garber played violin with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra after World War I and formed the Garber-Davis Orchestra with pianist Milton Davis from 1921-1924. After parting with Davis, he formed his own orchestra, playing both "sweet" and "hot" '20s dance music. He was hit hard by the Great Depression, and in the 1930s, he refashioned his ensemble into a big band and recorded a string of successful records for Victor. During World War II, Garber began playing swing jazz, a rather unexpected turn; his arranger during this time was Gray Rains and his vocalist was Liz Tilton. The recording restrictions in America during the war eventually made his ensemble unfeasible, and he returned to "sweet" music after the war, continuing to lead ensembles nearly up until the time of his death in 1977.Jan Garber Orchestra - Boulevard Of Broken Dreams (1934) Related: jan garber 1934 20's 30's 40's 50's | |

| Ramona - The Beat O' My Heart - 1934Wed, 07 Jan 2009 20:13:37 -0800 by leewileyandfriendsThe Beat O' My Heart was Harold Spina and Johnny Burke's second big success, written after Paul Whiteman heard that Guy Lombardo had an "exclusive" to perform "Annie Doesn't Live Here Anymore" for six weeks. Whiteman contacted the young song writers and requested a new song for him to feature exclusively for six weeks. The music was arranged in the "Schottische" rhythm and its clever lyrics were a challenge for any singer. Related: ramona davies paul whiteman | |

| James Love - Blue MoonWed, 07 Jan 2009 13:12:37 -0800 by oporopolistFrom the album Invitations.More about James Love: http://mbcinfoservic es.com/JamesLove/ind ex.htmlhttp://www.cd baby.com/cd/jameslov eThe history of the song Blue Moon (from http://en.wikipedia. org/wiki/Blue_Moon_( song) )Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart were contracted to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in May 1933. They were soon commissioned to write the songs for Hollywood Party, a film that was to star many of the studio's top artists. Richard Rodgers later recalled "One of our ideas was to include a scene in which Jean Harlow is shown as an innocent young girl saying - or rather singing - her prayers. How the sequence fitted into the movie I haven't the foggiest notion, but the purpose was to express Harlow's overwhelming ambition to become a movie star ('Oh Lord, if you're not busy up there,/I ask for help with a prayer/So please don't give me the air...')." The song was not even recorded and MGM Song #225 "Prayer ((Oh Lord, make me a movie star)" dated June 14, 1933, was registered for copyright as an unpublished work on July 10, 1933.Lorenz Hart wrote new lyrics for the tune to create a title song for the 1934 film Manhattan Melodrama: "Act One:/You gulp your coffee and run;/Into the subway you crowd./Dont breathe, it isnt allowed". The song, which was also titled It's Just That Kind Of Play, was cut from the film before release, and registered for copyright as an unpublished work on March 30, 1934. The studio then asked for a nightclub number for the film. Rodgers still liked the melody so Hart wrote a third lyric: The Bad In Every Man, (Oh, Lord /I could be good to a lover,/But then I always discover/The bad in evry man), which was sung by Shirley Ross made up in blackface. The song, which was also released as sheet music, was not a hit. After the film was released by MGM, Jack Robbins ? the head of the studio's publishing company?decided that the tune was suited to commercial release but needed more romantic lyrics and a punchier title. Hart was initially reluctant to write yet another lyric but he was persuaded. The result was "Blue moon/you saw me standing alone/without a dream in my heart/without a love of my own".Robbins licensed the song to Hollywood Hotel, a radio program that used it as the theme. On January 15, 1935, Connee Boswell recorded it for Columbia Records. It subsequently was featured in at least seven more MGM films including the Marx Brothers' At the Circus and Viva Las Vegas. | San Francisco General Strike Newsreel 2/2 (1934)Wed, 07 Jan 2009 08:10:11 -0800 by clasicdocumentaries3San Francisco's maritime strike, which began May 9, 1934, tumbled out of control when the Industrial Association, made up of employers and business interests who wished to break the strike, and the power of San Francisco unions, began to move goods from the piers to warehouses. The first running battles between unionists and police began Tuesday, July 3, 1934. There was a lull during the July 4 holiday when no freight was moved, but disturbances picked up again Thursday, July 5, 1934 known as "Bloody Thursday." The area where the rioting took place is now the heart of San Francisco's Multimedia Gulch.
