Egon Petri plays Liszt Waltz from Gounod's "Faust"

Franz Liszt (1811-1886):Paraphra se on a Waltz from Gounod's "Faust" S 407Egon Petri, pianoRecorded in 1936 Painting of Ary Scheffer (Dordrecht 1795 - Argenteuil 1858):Faust And Marguerite In The Garden (1846)The pianist Egon Petri was born in Hanover, Germany in 1881 and had his first violin lessons at the age of five from his father, the Dutch-born violinist Henri Petri, a favourite pupil of Joseph Joachim. Henri Petri had become Konzertmeister at the Royal Theatre in Hanover in 1881 and two years later took up a similar position with the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, before moving in 1889 to lead the Royal Chapel Orchestra in Dresden Egon Petri started his study of the piano in 1888, going on to further work under Richard Buchmayer, a musician and scholar with a strong interest in earlier music, and with Teresa Carreno. He also studied the organ, the French horn and composition, while completing his general education at the Dresden Kreuzschule in 1899. His first employment was as second violin in his father's quartet and as a member of the Royal Orchestra in Dresden, but by 1901 it had become apparent to him that his true vocation was that of a pianist, a decision in which he was encouraged by Ferruccio Busoni, a friend of the family.Petri went on to take lessons with Busoni in Berlin, where he also studied philosophy, continuing his studies under Busoni in Weimar and Dresden, before embarking on a concert career, at first in Holland and Germany, then throughout Europe and in the United States. One of the first foreign musicians of stature to visit the Soviet Union, he won considerable and continuing success there. His association with Busoni, with whom he appeared in London in 1921 in two-piano recitals, remained of importance, influencing his style of performance and making him one of the foremost interpreters of Busoni's work.Enjoying, at the same time, a very considerable reputation as a teacher, Petri served as a professor at the then Royal Manchester College of Music from 1905 to 1911, following this with similar work in Basle and at the Berlin Hochschule fur Musik. In 1927 he had made his home at Zakopane in Poland, but in 1938 he moved to America, spending the war years as pianist-in-residence at Cornell University and becoming an American citizen. In 1947 he moved to Mills College in California, holding a similar position there and only interrupting his stay to teach briefly in Basle. He died in 1962.Source: Naxos

Ernie O'Malley Part 1 of 6
Thu, 08 Jan 2009 13:50:18 -0800 by metalgearsolidfan

After the rising, O'Malley became deeply involved in Irish republican separatist activism, a fact he had to hide from his family, who had close ties to the establishment. A brother was a British officer. He left his studies and worked as a full-time organiser for the IRA from 1918 on, work that brought him to almost every corner of Ireland. On one occasion he attended a semi-public meeting of the Ulster Volunteer Force in County Tyrone for intelligence purposes, and lamented that such able men were opposed to his ideals.Although officially attached to IRA GHQ, O'Malley was tasked as a training officer for rural IRA units, which involved him in IRA operations throughout the country once the war got under way. In February 1920, he and Eoin O'Duffy led an IRA attack on the Royal Irish Constabulary barracks in Ballytrain, County Monaghan, and were successful in taking it over. This was the first capture of an RIC barracks in the war.In September, he and Liam Lynch led the 2nd County Cork Brigade in the only capture of a British army barracks in the conflict, in Mallow. They left with a haul of rifles, two Hotchkiss machine-guns and ammunition. The officers and soldiers later sacked the town, burning the town hall and the creamery, and ironically were only brought under control by members of the Auxiliary Division. He was captured by the British in Kilkenny in December 1920, in possession of a handgun. Much to his disgust, he had failed to destroy his notes, which contained the names of all the members of the 7th West Kilkenny Brigade, all of whom were subsequently arrested. Having undergone several beatings in Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin, and in severe danger of execution, he escaped two months later, through the aid of a sympathetic British soldier. In early 1921 O'Malley was placed in command of the IRA's Second Southern Division in Munster, giving him responsibility for IRA operations in Limerick, Kilkenny and Tipperary. After the rising, O'Malley became deeply involved in Irish republican separatist activism, a fact he had to hide from his family, who had close ties to the establishment. Pobladores de Zorritos y Contralmirante Villar realizan marcha de protesta por recorte del canon petrolero
Thu, 08 Jan 2009 09:18:32 -0800 by idealterna

Jan Garber Orchestra - Boulevard Of Broken Dreams (1934)
Wed, 07 Jan 2009 21:29:25 -0800 by edmundusrex

Jan Garber (Nov.5,1894, Indianapolis - Oct.5,1977, Shreveport) was an American jazz bandleader.Garber was known as "The Idol of the Airwaves" in his heyday of the 1920's and '30s, playing jazz in the vein of contemporaries such as Paul Whiteman and Guy Lombardo. Garber played violin with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra after World War I and formed the Garber-Davis Orchestra with pianist Milton Davis from 1921-1924. After parting with Davis, he formed his own orchestra, playing both "sweet" and "hot" '20s dance music. He was hit hard by the Great Depression, and in the 1930s, he refashioned his ensemble into a big band and recorded a string of successful records for Victor. During World War II, Garber began playing swing jazz, a rather unexpected turn; his arranger during this time was Gray Rains and his vocalist was Liz Tilton. The recording restrictions in America during the war eventually made his ensemble unfeasible, and he returned to "sweet" music after the war, continuing to lead ensembles nearly up until the time of his death in 1977.Jan Garber Orchestra - Boulevard Of Broken Dreams (1934)

Ornstein - Arabesques

Arabesques Op. 42 No. 1 (1921)I. "The Isle of Elephants"II. "Primal Echo"III. "Chant of Hindoo Priests"IV. "Shadowed Waters"V. "A Melancholy Landscape"VI. "Pompeian Fresco"VII. "Passion"VIII. "Les Basoches"IX. "The Wailing and Raging Wind"Marc-Andre Hamelin, pianoLeo Ornstein (1893-2002) was once a celebrated American composer in the early 20th-century, often regarded as the "poster boy" for the avant-garde in American music. Music textbooks are quick to cite Henry Cowell as the progenitor of the tone cluster in art-music, but credit should be given to Ornstein, who made innovative applications of tone clusters in his early piano pieces of the 1910s. Although considered an American composer, Ornstein was born in Ukraine and studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. He established a controversial but famous repuation in America both as a pianist and as a radically modern composer. But after 1920, Ornstein slowly abandoned his efforts in the avant-garde and his idiom became relaxed and more conservative, angering many of the modernist cohorts who admired his music. In the 1930's Ornstein and his wife founded a music school in Philadelphia and he devoted his time to teaching until the 1950's. Throughout these decades Ornstein's music and his very name became marginalized and he seemed to vanish from the music world entirely until the 1970's. After turning his back on the avant-garde, Ornstein composed music in an accessible style reminiscent of Rachmaninov with occasional forays into biting dissonance. His last composition, the Eighth Piano Sonata, was finished at the age of 97, but it is his early experimental works that show the indelible stamp of genius.

Dario Moreno - Un poncho e un sombrero - 1963
Tue, 06 Jan 2009 05:54:49 -0800 by goochemesally

Dario Moreno - Un poncho e un sombrero - 1963Darío Moreno (April 3, 1921 December 1, 1968) was a Turkish polyglot singer of Jewish origin, as well as an accomplished composer, lyricist and guitarist, who was born in ?zmir, Turkey, in 1921, and who attained fame and made a remarkable career centered in France which also included films, during the fifties and the sixties. His real name was David Arugete and he was born in the poorer Jewish quarter of ?zmir to a large family. He was orphaned in early childhood when his father, who worked in a train station in the city, was shot dead under tragic circumstances. He was placed in the Sephardic orphanage of ?zmir (Nino De Guerfanos) by his mother and remained there until he was four. After a primary education in the Jewish educational establishments of ?zmir, he did many odd jobs during his early youth. But he has also put great effort into improving his education at the same time while working for the bread, and having started as an errand boy in the cabinet of one of the city's prominent lawyers, he was in time raised to becoming a clerk in his office. In the evenings, he would study French in ?zmir's Central Library. With a guitar that had fallen into his hands by chance, he also learned, mainly on his own with occasional tutoring asked here and there, to master playing that instrument. He started singing in the Bar Mitzva feasts as a secondary occupation. In his early twenties, he had already become a well-known singer in ?zmir, and particularly among the Jewish community. During his military service in the Turkish Army, he was employed as a singer in officers' quarters in various garrisons and became more focused on music. His first truly professional musical performance started in his hometown right after his discharge, through connections established while under the arms. Since he had started making money thanks to music, he moved to the more well-off Jewish quarter of Karata? to a house in a street leading to the historical building of Asansör, one of the city's landmarks (and which means, literally, the "Elevator", people taking an actual elevator to go to the higher part of the quarter, this part being separated by the coastal strait with a steep slope). This street is named Dario Moreno Soka?? (Dario Moreno Street) today in his memory.A hyper-active personality, Darío Moreno died of a heart attack in a taxi while going to the airport in ?stanbul on 1 December 1968. He was only 47. He was buried in Holon, Israel, by his mother Madam Roza.
