Mumm-Ra summons Hammerhand and his Berserkers to his pyramid and coerces them into his bubbling cauldron. When they emerge, they are coated in Thundranium and set out to capture the Thundercats. Pumyra, freeing a trapped unicorn, finds herself in a Berserker trap. Weakened by being in close proximity to the Berserker Thundranium armor, she is set free to lure the other Thundercats. As Ben-Gali and Lynx-O locate Pumyra, they find themselves in a Berserker trap and are attacked. Fleeing to the nearby ThunderStrike, the pursuing Berserkers attack the ship. Lynx-O uses his light shield to signal the Cats' Lair. Lion-O and the other Thundercats rush to him, leaving Snarf amd the Thunderkittens at the Lair. As the Thundercats battle the Berserkers, the Thundranium armor wears off and the Berserkers retreat cowardly. Returning to Cats' Lair, the Thundercats discover that Aluro seemingly hypnotizes Lion-O and Tygra, but they have cleverly used earplugs to block out the sound of the Aluro's voice. Using the Sword, Lion-O and the Thundercats defeat the evil Luna-Taks.

Pumyra and Ben-Gali are aboard the ThunderStrike when suddenly Lynx-O takes control of the ship. Aboard the ThunderClaw, Panthro and Lion-O pursue the ThunderStrike and, catching up to it, Lion-O boards, takes control, and returns it safely to the ground. Pumyra and Ben-Gali inform Lion-O that the previous night Lynx-O received information through his Braille Board, which may be causing him to act so strangely: Ma-Mutt uncovered the Book of Norvog Noszh, the only existing history of Third Earth, and delivered it to Mumm-Ra. The book depicts an historic tale of the Mask of Gorgon and the hills of Elfshima. Mumm-Ra calls upon Tug-Mug and Chilla to steal the Mask of Gorgon from the Warrior Maidens' Treetop Kingdom, where it is embedded in guarded an tree's bark. Upon stealing the mask, they mistakenly look into its eyes -- they are turned to stone. Summoning the mask to his pyramid, Mumm-Ra orders it to turn the Thundercats to stone. Willa informs the Thundercats of the mask's theft, stressing that it must be returned to its tree bark home and must not be allowed to face the hills of Elfshima. Inviting Lion-O to recapture the mask from his pyramid, Mumm-Ra tricks Lion-O, Pumyra and Willa by transforming into Nayda. The mask turns the three to stone and Mumm-Ra steals the Sword of Omens. As the mask looks through the sword's eyepieces towards the hills of Elfshima, the historic tale comes to fruition -- the range of hills is brought to life in the form of a reclining giant -- the Childe of Gorgon. Flying in the ThunderStrike, Ben-Gali and Lynx-O maneuver the ship through the giant's ear canal and blast the inner ear with laser canons. Losing its equilibrium, the giant's fall causes the mask to crash to the ground and shatter. Order is restored to Third Earth.

Playing upon Aluro's hunger for power, Mumm-Ra employs him to find the Egora Talisman, a magic charms piece which gives its possessor supreme self-confidence. Lion-O and Snarf discover Aluro searching the Cats' Lair grounds and after following him, learn of his quest and of the riddle which will lead Aluro to the talisman. Lion-O summons the other Thundercats and together they decipher the ancient scroll's riddle: they will find the talisman by traveling through the Forest of Mists to Darkside. Arriving in Darkside, the Thundercats encounter Aluro who has found the talisman. Soon, Aluro has all of the Thundercats entranced by the charm's magical powers and under his control. Discovering the talisman's closed storage box nearby, Snarf assumed an aura of confidence and attacks and defeats Aluro. Only after the Thundercats are free from their spell does Snarf learn that the storage box was empty and that the talisman was destroyed. Snarf's strength with which he freed his fellow Thundercats came from within himself.

After discovering that the horrific Luna-Taks: Luna, Amok, Aluro, Red-Eye, Chilla and Tug-Mug are free, Lion-O, Cheetara and Snarf return to the Lair to inform the other Thundercats. Ma-Mutt transforms into Mumm-Ra and descends upon the Luna-Taks preaching that they must work with him to destroy the Thundercats. Lion-O calls a council meeting at the Lair to plan a way into Darkside in pursuit of the Luna-Taks. Absent from the meeting, Panthro, Pumyra and Ben-Gali are off to the Thundrillium mines to replenish their low supplies. They discover the Thundrillium missing from the mine site and are attacked by a pack of Brutemen. Panthro success in calming them down, discovering them chained and enslaved in the mine. Ben-Gali frees the Brutemen with his pick-hammer and the Thundercats return to the Lair where we learn from several Bolkins and Wollos that there have been abductions in their villages. At the Luna-Taks' mobile heardquarters, Skytomb, we find these kidnapped villagers enslaved. Lion-O, in the HoverCat, and the ThunderKittens, on their spaceboards, scout the area near Fire Rock Mountain and find the Luna-Taks and Mutants with the village slaves. Lion-O battles Tug-Mug and then summons the other Thundercats with the Sword. But before Thundercat help arrives, Tug-Mug steals the Sword and break it in two. Panthro, Tygra and Lynx-O arrive in the new ThunderStrike, and, outnumbered, Tug-Mug and the Mutants retreat. At Skytomb, the Mutants and Luna-Taks bicker over who is more powerful, during which a Wollo and a Bolkin slave succeed in escaping. As Ben-Gali forges the broken Sword of Omens together, Panthro, Cheetara and Pumyra arrive with the escaped Wollo and Bolkin, who tell the Thundercats of the Mutants/Luna-Taks activities and of a way into Darkside through the Forest of Mists. Aboard the ThunderStrike, with Lynx-O as navigator, the Thundercats arrive at Darkside. The Wollo and Bolkin direct the Thundercats toward Skytomb's location only to discover charred ground in its place. With Skytomb mobile, the una-Taks are free to terrorize all of Third Earth.

When we last joined the Thundercats, Mumm-Ra: the Ever-Living was consumed by the eruption on Fire Rock Mountain and the Thundercats looked towards a peaceful like on Third Earth. In this episode, Ma-Mutt rescues the weakened Mumm-Ra from the eruption's [remnants]. While recuperating, Mumm-Ra transforms Ma-Mutt into his duplicate to employ the Mutants to release the most fearsome and dreaded of the Thundercats' enemies, the Luna-Taks of Plun-Darr! As early immigrants to Third Earth from Plun-Darr's moons, the six evil Luna-Taks lost their clash for supremacy against Mumm-Ra and wer entombed in the lave pits of Darkside. Snarf overhears Ma-Mutt/Mumm-Ra's orders to the Mutants and is chased, in turn, by the angry Mutants. The sword alerts Lion-O to Snarf's dangerous situation and Lion-O summons the Thundercats. After battling off the Mutants, the Thundercats reutrn to the Lair where Snarf informations them of Mumm-Ra's plan to free the Luna-Taks. The Thundercats decide to build Lynx-O a braille board which will serve as his informational device against the Luna-Taks and Pumyra and Ben-Gali scout for the Mutans in the ThunderClaw and HoverCat. They discover the Mutants on Fire Rock Mountain but, because of the deadly fumes from the Thundranium pits below, cannot pursue them. Upon returning to the Lair, the Thundercats work on a plan to penetrate Darkside, the forbidden territory of evil which is surrounded by the Thundranium pits. While searching in the ThunderTank for an entrance into Darkside, the Thundercats are distracted by a flash of light in the distance. Lion-O uses the sword to location the explosion's source, discovering that the Mutants have succeeded in freeing the Luna-Taks from their lave encasements.

As Lion-O and Snarf prospect for Thundrillium, Mumm-Ra turns into Dr. Dometone and lures Lion-O to the deadly museum. Snarf fails to stop Mumm-Ra and rushes back to the Lair for help. Inside the museum, a painting of Safari Joe comes alive and ambushes Lion-O. Lion-O defeats Safari Joe only to face Ratar-O, who jumps out of a painting and attacks. Ratar-O traps Lion-O in the electrical force of his Electro Sais, but Lion-O breaks free. Mumm-Ra appears and douses Lion-O with Warp Gas. The gas makes Lion-O too scared to fight, so he runs. Meanwhile, the other Thundercats set out in the ThunderTank to rescue Lion-O. Once within Mumm-Ra's museum, they decide Lion-O must be inside one of the paintings. Wilykat and Wilykit enter the Safari Joe painting. The other Thundercats drive the ThunderTank into a painting of Spidera, who traps the ThunderTank in her webs. They are saved from certain destruction by Mumm-Rana, a female mirror image of Mumm-Ra, a force for good who lives in a White Pyramid. Mumm-Rana is led to believe that the Mutants are good and the Thundercats evil. Mumm-Ra enthralls her and turns her power against the Thundercats. She puts the Sword of Omens in stasis and threatens the Lair itself. Lion-O disguises himself as a wealthy Tabbut and, with Tygra's help, sets himself up to be robbed by the Mutants. Mumm-Rana witnesses the attack, and the true and evil nature of the Mutants is revealed to her. The revelation breaks Mumm-Ra's spell and Mumm-Rana releases the Sword of Omens. Mumm-Rana and the Thundercats now defeat Mumm-Ra and the Mutants, but her ordeal threatens to destroy Mumm-Rana. In a desperate race for time, the Thundercats return her to the White Pyramid, where her powers are rejuvenated.

The Thunderkittens keep the theft a secret from Lion-O and go to Castle Plun-Darr to get the weapons back. They surprise Monkian as he vainly poses in front of a mirror with Panthro's nun-chuks. The Mutants attack and the Thunderkittens escape back to the Lair using their magic pellets. The Thunderkittens return later with Lion-O to engage the Mutants. Lion-O calls the other Thundercats using the Sword -- then a Mutant Heat Ball causes him to drop it. The Thunderkittens are able to subdue the Mutants first with a magic pellet, which causes a tidal wave, then with another, which engulfs the Mutants in laughing gas. The Thundercats reclaim their weapons.

The concluding trial in Lion-O's Anointment Trials, a series of tests each of the Lord of the Thundercats has had to pass in order to prove himself worthy of his inherited title, pits him against the evil Mumm-Ra. In this trial, Lion-O must face Mumm-Ra alone, without the aid of the other Thundercats and without the Sword of Omens. Jaga appears and offers Lion-O advice, but Lion-O decides to go his own way. Mumm-Ra summons the Mutants and commands them to destroy Lion-O before he gets to the pyramid. The Mutants attack him and trap him in an underground pit, which is similar to Mumm-Ra's pyramid. While underground, Lion-O encounters and overcomes many of Mumm-Ra's obstacles; a faceless Boatman; a living ceiling; a huge, one-eyed cocoon; the Inflamer. Lion-O finally reaches Mumm-Ra's pyramid and engages in battle one-on-one with Mumm-Ra. During the battle, Lion-O realizes that Mumm-Ra's sarcophagus is the source of his regenerating power. Lion-O hurls the sarcophagus into the boiling Cauldron. Mumm-Ra turns to ashes. Jaga appears again and praises Lion-O for his heroism and bravery. Lion-O vindicates his own plans by defeating Mumm-Ra, thus proving that he is indeed worthy of his inherited title.

The concluding trial in Lion-O's Anointment Trials, a series of tests each of the Lord of the Thundercats has had to pass in order to prove himself worthy of his inherited title, pits him against the evil Mumm-Ra. In this trial, Lion-O must face Mumm-Ra alone, without the aid of the other Thundercats and without the Sword of Omens. Jaga appears and offers Lion-O advice, but Lion-O decides to go his own way. Mumm-Ra summons the Mutants and commands them to destroy Lion-O before he gets to the pyramid. The Mutants attack him and trap him in an underground pit, which is similar to Mumm-Ra's pyramid. While underground, Lion-O encounters and overcomes many of Mumm-Ra's obstacles; a faceless Boatman; a living ceiling; a huge, one-eyed cocoon; the Inflamer. Lion-O finally reaches Mumm-Ra's pyramid and engages in battle one-on-one with Mumm-Ra. During the battle, Lion-O realizes that Mumm-Ra's sarcophagus is the source of his regenerating power. Lion-O hurls the sarcophagus into the boiling Cauldron. Mumm-Ra turns to ashes. Jaga appears again and praises Lion-O for his heroism and bravery. Lion-O vindicates his own plans by defeating Mumm-Ra, thus proving that he is indeed worthy of his inherited title.
