This is the 3rd year I have been asked to teach a class on How Helicopters work to the 8th Grade Science Class at Sibley/Ocheyedan Jr. High School in Sibley, Iowa.The pleasure is all mine, believe me. I hope to have inspired those kids, by stimulating them to come up with a Nuclear battery or Hydrogen Fuel Cell, so we have longer run times.The classes were attentive and were enjoyable to teach.I first showed them the Clip of The making of Blue Thunder by me.They I explained cyclic pitch, general helicopter theory and principals.From there, I flew the Exceed RC Mini Spark in the Classroom to show the progress of todays small helicopters. Then we went to the gym where I flew my CH 46 Marine Corps tandem rotored helicopter and my Exceed RC Blue Ray.(All helicopters were donated to the effort by Xheli.com. This Exceed RC F4 Phantom (see this nitroplanes link) http://www.anrdoezrs .net/click-3235026-1 0507606 is very pleasing for me to see and fly. My MOS in the Marine aviation field was 6646, Avionics Specialist and Electrician.My planes.? The RF4B Phantom. Our RF4B (R stands for reconnaissance) were electronically sophisticated for the time, with nothing but their cameras for a weapon. RF4Bs were sleek and carried FLR and SLR and DLR in the nose among other ways of seeing the enemy in the Nam with infrared heat photography. It was an exciting time for me in the Marine corps and I would love to get in the back seat again and go for a ride.This Phantom from Exceed RC, which I got from Nitoplanes is a very nicely made kit. It is best to fly this on grass fields, because it is easily scratched up on hard surfaces. By Request, I show how to use the control sticks to fly a helicopter on Aerofly pro deluxe from ( http://www.hobby-lob by.com )You would never jump in a real heli, and say, "Hey, I'll just figure it out!"Flying an RC model HELI is about the same as trying to balance a BALL BEARING in SPACE! You move it slightly, and you have to do EVERYTHING YOU CAN (moving all 7 CONTROLS AT ONCE) just to get it stopped, let alone trying to GET IT BACK to you! Then, if the nose is pointing at you, 4 of those controls are REVERSED!This is all hard learned with RC HELI Pilots and why there are so few of us around.Its NERVE-WRACKING for most and why only 4% of the people, actually advance to simply HOVER, let alone move on to 3D (stunts). These tiny planes do not have removable wings, so here is how to make it removable and be able to experiment with different wing designs of your own. Just like bigger RC planes, if you have a rough landing or crash, the wing just pops off with the rubber bands keeping it safe.
