Reluctantly he does push the buttons but the pendulum descends upon him regardless and cuts him in two, meaning the trap was inescapable, and therefore not one that had been set by Jigsaw (Tobin Bell).In a scene from the end of Saw IV Agent Strahm (Scott Paterson) enters the room where Jigsaw died and shoots Jeff Reinhart (Angus Macfadyen) dead in self-defence. Seconds later, someone locks the door on Strahm. He exits through a secret door, and finds a recorder. The recording warns him he can find salvation or die in the room, and urges him to make the right choice. He disregards it and is attacked by a figure in a pig mask. He wakes up in one of Jigsaw's traps and finds his head in a sealed box, which quickly starts to fill with water. Was wiederum damit zu tun haben könnte, dass sich Sidney durch ein paar ganz und gar unpassende Charakterzüge auszeichnet. Als da wären: Sarkasmus, Flegelhaftigkeit und eine verblüffende Unfähigkeit, seine vorlaute Zunge zu zügeln. Alles in allem läuft es nicht gut für ihn, und als Sidney sich gerade einmal wieder fragt, was in seinem Leben falsch läuft, erreicht ihn ein Anruf aus New York. Das berühmte ?Sharps-Magazine bietet ihm die Chance seines Lebens. Auch mit seinem darauf folgenden Film, "Der Ewige Gärtner", legte er wieder einmal eine meisterhafte Leistung als Regisseur hin. Nun weitere drei Jahre darauf erscheint sein neuster Film, die Literaturverfilmung von "Die Stadt der Blinden".Die "Stadt der Blinden" wurde 1995 vom brasilianischen Autor José Saramago veröffentlicht und international mit allerlei Preisen ausgezeichnet. Saramagos größter Verdienst war dabei der Literaturnobelpreis. Viele Filmemacher versuchten sich seitdem die Rechte daran zu sichern, Saramago verweigerte sie aber allen von ihnen, weil er sein Werk für unverfilmbar hiel: "Ich habe mich immer geweigert (die Rechte an DIE STADT DER BLINDEN zu verkaufen)", erzählte Saramago 2007 dem New York Times Magazine. "Es ist ein gewalttätiges Buch über das Ende der Gesellschaft... Ich wollte nicht, dass der Stoff in die falschen Hände fällt." Drehbuchautor Don McKellar und Produzent Niv Fichman schafften es mit viel Arbeit aber dann trotzdem, den mittlerweile 80-jährigen Autor zu überzeugen und holten kurz darauf Regisseur Meirelles mit ins Boot, der sofort von der Idee begeistert war. "Fernando hätte zu diesem Zeitpunkt jede erdenkliche Art von Film machen können. Aber jeder, der schon einmal mit ihm gearbeitet hat, weiß um sein Anliegen, einen Beitrag zu leisten, dass die Welt ein besserer Ort wird. Das ist einer der Gründe, warum ihm dieser Stoff so wichtig war," so Produzentin Andrea Barata. Die Filmfestspiele in Cannes wurden dieses Jahr von "Die Stadt der Blinden" eröffnet und zur Überraschung aller waren die Reaktionen darauf etwas zurückhaltend.Darste llerisch gibt es an "Die Stadt der Blinden" nichts auszusetzen. Julianne Moore ("The Hours") überzeugt als einzige Sehende mit großer Verantwortung und schwer zu treffenden Entscheidungen einmal mehr, was anderes ist man von ihr auch nicht gewohnt. Aber auch der komplette Riege an Nebendarsteller ist gut besetzt und spielt seinen Part überzeugend, darunter bekannte Namen wie Danny Glover ("Lethal Weapon"), Mark Ruffalo ("Zodiac"), Alice Braga ("City of God") oder Gael García Bernal ("Babel").Fazit: "Die Stadt der Blinden" ist leider nicht der vielversprechende große Wurf geworden, den man von einem Regisseur wie Fernando Meirelles erwartet hätte. Schlecht ist der Film auf keinen Fall, im Gegenteil, er ist sogar sehr gut, aber er hätte eben noch besser werden können, wenn einige Elemente innerhalb der Story nicht stören würden.
